How to make a shower tray yourself
The Internet is full of all kinds of information about this, but the question: how to make a shower tray in a city bathroom, you probably won't get a clear answer.
Plumbing sellers are naturally surprised: "Why is this necessary, with a huge selection of shower cabins?"It seems to me that there are two reasons.
The first is the desire to have a non-shower stall 70 x 70 cm, in which it is not so easy to take a shower because of its size. If you previously had a 150 cm long bathtub, it would be more reasonable to make a shower tray of the same size. You must agree that it will not be so easy to buy a pallet of this size.
The second reason is that you will surprise all your friends with an original approach to bathroom renovation. And you will be envied by the owners of a standard shower stall (which has a tray almost as high as a bathroom). If there is a column in the corner, it won't bother us, so we can easily get around it.
Now everything is in order. Let's consider the standard option of how to make a shower tray in the bathroom.
1. It is necessary to replace the sewer pipe with a new PVC pipe with a diameter of 40 mm. There won't be any problems, as there was an old sewer system here.
2. We buy a tray siphon in the store, which has an internal glass with a thread that adjusts the height.
3. We connect the siphon to the drain sewer and fix it, greasing it with PVC pipe glue for reliability. Our siphon cannot be replaced, as it will be sealed after installation. It is worth noting that the angle of the sewer must be maintained at least 3 cm per meter of pipe so that the water drains quickly. The siphon itself must be strictly horizontal to the floor level, for this it is necessary to heat the pipe with a gas burner and bend it slightly. The main thing is not to overheat the pipe so that it does not crack.
4. We create the shape of our pallet from a simple brick, laying it flat on a thin layer of cement mortar. When the pallet has acquired the desired shape, we fix the siphon so that its upper part is 2 cm higher than the pallet itself.
We make a concrete mortar and pre-position the 1.5 cm thick rails around the perimeter, fill the base of the pallet. When the solution dries a little, we shape the inside of our pallet. In other words, it is necessary to make a slope from four corners to the siphon, so that the water does not stand later. Important! The siphon should not be above the solution, but should be at the same level.
5. Now it's our turn to waterproofing our pallet. I always use a material- a soft surfaced roof. The width of the sheet is 1m, which is quite suitable for us. We cut off a piece of material 50 cm longer than the size of the future pallet and spread it so that the excess 25 cm on both sides are superimposed on the walls. Then we cut off another strip 35 cm wide and apply it along the wall and our pallet (10 cm overlap the sheet in the pallet). Now it remains to smooth everything out well and, again, using a gas burner, heat the material at the overlap point of the strip and glue it together.
It is worth paying attention to the two corners and additionally melting a small piece of material in the shape of a triangle. We also warm up the edges of the roofing sheet along the wall and, pressing, for example, with a trowel, fix it to the wall.
Where the siphon is located, we cut a hole from inside the siphon in a circle. There is no need to reheat or glue in this place, because we insert the lid of the threaded siphon and tighten it tightly to the end.
6. The next step is to finish the pallet itself with mosaic tiles, which are more often used for finishing pools (Glue is recommended only in white). The last time my customer wanted the pallet to be made of natural stone, such as river stone. It remains to cover the walls around the pallet with the same tile, or, more often, we select tiles of the same tone as the existing one. And if you are doing a turnkey bathroom renovation, then even better.
7. We rub the tiles in the pallet and on the walls with a grout mass and install sliding doors along the edge of the pallet, smearing with silicone at the junctions with the wall and the pallet.
It will take two days to make a shower tray in the bathroom and install the sliding shower doors. But you will get a unique shower cabin as a result.
